Blogging for Your Business | Don’t Make These 5 Mistakes

Some people think blogging is an easy task and all you do is jot down your thoughts.  This is not the case. Great business blogging is so much more. It is a skill that you have to practice to perfect. Blogging for your business is a great way to drive traffic to your website and gain leads. But if you want blogging to be an effective digital marketing strategy, you have to do it right. Here are the 5 biggest blogging mistakes that should be avoided at all costs!

common blogging for your business mistakes

1. Writing About Irrevelant Topics

When blogging for your business, you want to have a primary goal in mind. Your blog should serve what the company is trying to accomplish, not whatever pops into your head that day. It is your job as the company blogger to engage, guide, and inspire readers. They do not want to hear about your personal experiences or opinions. Find out all of the larger scale goals to gain ideas of what you want to inform your readers about. Incorporate commonly asked questions and updated news in the industry your business is apart of. Keep it relevant or it can backfire!

2. Not Conntecting With Your Audience

It is common for bloggers to fail to connect with their audiences. This is often due to their writing style. When blogging for your business, its okay to be more conversational in your writing. You want to come across as approachable and show some personality in your blogs. No one wants to read an essay or feel as if they are talking to a robot. Make a joke or two, use a contraction here and there – that’s how you would talk in real life. Just keep in mind you are representing your business, so stay professional and classy people!

3. Taking Credit for Other People’s Work

An easy beginner’s mistake to make when blogging for your business is plagiarism. It didn’t work in school and it still will not work for you today, especially for your company’s blog. People still continue to do it and don’t realize the negative effects it will bring. Google is smarter than many people may  think. When you plagiarize content that has already been published on the Internet, Google will catch it and your site can be penalized. This will set back your online organic growth and will hurt your content quality. Make sure to cite quotes or ideas that are taken from another source.

4. Not Editing Your Work

Writing a blog can be a time consuming task. Once your done with writing it you just want to press publish. This is a common mistake that is overlooked and can hurt your business. If you do not edit your work, the content can come across as messy and confusing to readers. The blog may sound great in your head when writing it for the first time, but can come out as gibberish to others. Take the time to reread it and fix typos, grammatical errors, rewrite sentences, or any other mistakes you may have made. You want each concept to be fully thought out and easy to read. Make sure your blog flows as well as a normal conversation would.

5. Inconsistently Blogging for Your Business

Inconsistency is a big problem that should be avoided at all costs if you want your business blog to be successful. It is one of the primary reasons a reader will become disengaged with a publisher. Your goal is to engage and interest readers on a constant basis. Blogs that are successful for the long haul are those that create content often. Businesses that publish more than 16 posts per month get 4.5 times more leads than companies that publish 0 to 4 monthly posts. Commit to publishing quality content multiple times weekly to stay relevant. Set reminders or whatever it takes for you to stay up to date with your blogging!
