How to SEO Your Social Media Pages

Google’s mission statement is to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” When it comes to SEO and determining what factors search engines will be using to rank pages, it’s important to look at the keywords, pun intended, in that mission statement useful. We have already touched about why search engines rank the way they do in our previous blog post, but just to reiterate, search engines are not only interested in bringing information that contain similar words to the top of the search that they customer is performing. Search engines are bringing relevant content that will be useful to their searcher; otherwise they would lose that customer to another search engine and so lose business.

SEO is incredibly important for your business and so is social media marketing!

Now with that background taken care of, what does social media have to do with the rankings in searches? What search engines, and specifically Google, has realized is that social media has become a somewhat rating system for businesses, people and content. They have taken this realization and integrated it into their algorithms to bring even more content, and you, as a business, can take advantage of this! To have a successful SEO campaign, coupling it with a social media one is becoming a necessity. Social media is helping Google by telling search engines what people like, who they are interacting with and what they are sharing and talking about. The following tips are ways to influence your SEO by optimizing your social media pages!

Building Your Social Media Credibility

What search engines want to avoid is ranking content or pages that really do not have any authority to be saying or posting the material being searched. In other words, they want to make sure a credible source is being found first, with reliable information. So if it was a blog post, for example, Google would want to make sure the blog post information was coming with some backing.

Your social media pages can be optimized to be found on search engines!

So how is social media playing a part in this? Well, let’s go back to the blog post. Say you’re super credible, you post on your social media your latest post, and your followers see that content, agree it is extremely informational and retweet it or share it online. The amount of shares, retweets, likes will all increase your social influence and increase your credibility online.

To build your social media influence, it is important to, number one, have a good following. The more page likes or followers you have the better influence you have. Google can, however, tell the difference between real followers and bought ones, so it will be a waste of funds to buy likes and it will actually hurt your SEO. It takes more time to build a good social media base, but having high quality followers on all your social channels will mean more engagement and interaction with your content, which is the ultimate goal.

Social signals, such as how often you are posting to your social media outlets, how many people are interacting with your posts, and if there are social sharing elements available to visitors to your site. These social signals all play a part when Google is crawling the web! So again, return to the blog post. An informational, relevant and factual blog post that was getting retweeted or discussed and shared by your online followers, would have more social signals and thus would rank higher on Google.

Content is King

What we have been saying again and again is basically Google will rank great and relevant content higher because that is the main goal of a search engine. Just imagine Googling a chicken recipe and your results being filled with car stats or something like that; wouldn’t make sense and would make you probably want to use a different search engine.

Is content king? Does it help my social media?

What this is all going towards saying is, people are looking for content, so give that to them. It’s not a complex concept, just a tedious task. Content that is relevant to your industry, intriguing to your followers and will get them interacting. Having original and engaging content will also encourage external inbound links. Other sites will want to link to your content and social media will be the channel in which they do that. This will definitely increase your credibility and authority and continue your business to the top of the rankings!

When you are posting, you want to optimize them for searches. By using keywords and making your content shareable, you are making your posts searchable. When posting specifically to social media outlets, a good technique would be to have a main anchor or hook to the post, so a great image, video, link or infographic, and then supplementing that with keyword oriented text. By adding seasonal keywords, you also increase your search-ability for obviously that time of the year. And definitely add hashtags. It specifically identifies your post and will connect you directly with the followers with those same thoughts and hashtags, your perfect audience!

Another tip for optimizing your posts for searches is by posting about “trending” topics or popular social media updates, you will be favored in top positions for such searches. Being trends, this strategy is mainly to capitalize on a temporary opportunity and just supplement the overall campaign, but it is a technique for staying relevant and getting ranked for it.

Optimizing your social media for searches will increase your web presence and ultimately increase your business. You absolutely want to be investing in this optimization, if not your time then your resources, in order to stay in front of your competition.
