Have you ever wondered how non-web developer, bloggers make it looks so easy that a caveman can do it? It all comes down to their content management system, also known as a CMS.

At its core, a content management system is any software that helps users create, edit, and manage content on a website without the need for any specialized knowledge. Content management systems make it possible for you to manage your website without needing to know how to code from scratch.

Luckily, you don’t have to build your own CMS. There are many different types of content management systems that can be used to create innumerable amounts of content for your website. You just have to pick the one that’s right for you.

How exactly do you go about that? Let’s find out.

What is content management system in website development?

How Does a Content Management System Work?

Essentially, content management systems make it so you don’t have to write everything in code and manually upload it. Content management systems streamline the process and make your workspace look and behave similarly to a Word document.

It not only makes uploading text easier but media too. Content management systems keep everything organized for you. So, instead of sorting through your server, you’re able to leisurely scroll through a library of images. The benefits don’t just stop at organization either. Content management systems ensure things will run smoothly on the front end as well.

Most content management systems will have two versions — a visual side and a text side. The visual side looks most like a Word document and typically contains all the tools and shortcuts you need in order to format content. This is super user-friendly.

If you don’t know how to write in code, the visual side will be the side you operate in more often than not. The text side shows how your content looks written in HTML. It’s important to know how to use both sides of the system – even just the basics – for troubleshooting purposes if nothing else.

What Goes Into a Content Management System?

From a technical standpoint, there are two major components to every content management system, the content management application (CMA) and the content delivery application (CDA).

The content management application is the part that you will be most familiar with. It’s the place where you put your content and manage it. You can add, edit, and manage all of your website’s content from this application. On the other hand, the content delivery application is the nitty-gritty back end side of things. It’s where whatever you added on the management side of things is processed and “delivered” to the front end of your site for the world to see.

What Are Some Examples of Content Management Systems?

There are several different content management systems that are widely used. But, the one that dominates the marketplace right now is WordPress. Over 35% of all websites are run on WordPress, and that’s not counting all of the other smaller projects hosted on their servers either. WordPress has become the most widely used because of how user-friendly and accessible it is to the masses.

Other commonly used content management systems are:

  • Joomla
  • Drupal
  • Magento
  • Squarespace
  • Wix

All of these systems come with their own strengths and you should look into what each of them offers before making a decision. Just like if you’re an eCommerce store, you might want to go with something more suited for it like Magento. WordPress sites are mostly used for:

  • Static websites
  • Blogs
  • Forums
  • Social networks
  • Online courses
  • Membership sites
  • And more

You should make sure you are operating on the system that is right for you, or else managing your content will become a hassle.

What is the Best Content Management System for My Business?

Choosing the best content management system is like choosing your favorite pizza topping – everyone has their own opinion and some options are better than others depending on what you are looking for.

A good content management system will be user friendly, offer flexibility, and improve the experience for both the user and the reader.

Ideally, you want a system that you know how to operate and are comfortable working with. If you’ve used one or more of these systems in the past with success, lean on what you know. If you’re someone that has never written content before and are unfamiliar with the internet, you probably don’t want to use a system that relies on you knowing HTML. You might get a system recommended to you that you are unfamiliar with, but don’t worry. You can learn the ins and outs of most systems with a little focus and practice.

At the end of the day, the best content management system is the one that you are most comfortable with. WordPress isn’t always the best option, but it is a great option most of the time.
