One particularly effective way to market your business online is using Google AdWords. Being that Google is the world’s leading search engine with over 100 billion searches per month, it’s one of the best places to increase brand exposure and website visits. So what is Google AdWords? And how does Google AdWords work? Keep reading to learn the basics of Google AdWords and what it can do for your business!

What Is Google AdWords?

“What is Google AdWords?” is a common question that you unknowingly already know the answer to. By definition, Google AdWords is Google’s advertising service for businesses to advertise on its network. By example, it’s what you see when you search for information, products or services on Google. Have you ever noticed the ads at the top or side of your Google search results? They look just like the organic results, but have a small “Ad” symbol next to them. These are Google ads, and you’ve most likely clicked them at one point or another.

How Does Google AdWords Work?

“How Does Google AdWords work?” is another common question, except this time you probably don’t know the answer. Luckily, we can explain it in simple terms.

Creating your Google AdWords campaign begins with choosing keywords. Keywords are the words or phrases you think people will type into Google when searching for a business like yours. For example, if you offer a cleaning service in South Florida, you might choose “best cleaning service in South Florida” or “South Florida affordable cleaning service.”

Understanding what Google AdWords is and how Google AdWords works can help your business market.

Once you choose which keywords to use, you decide on the amount you’re willing to pay for each keyword. This is your maximum cost-pet-click. If you didn’t already know, Google AdWords is pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. This means that you pay each time someone clicks on your ad. So your maximum cost-per-click is the maximum amount you’ll pay when people type in one of your keywords and click your ad. The cost of keywords depends on their popularity, among other things. In addition, you can set a daily budget on your AdWords campaign by determining the average amount of money you want to spend each day in total. Sounds great, right?

AdWords is pretty great, but it does have its disadvantages. With every great advertising platform comes great competition. In fact, about 97% of Google’s revenue comes from its advertising services, so you imagine how many businesses are using AdWords. With all of these ads, how does Google determine which ads to show for each keyword? According to Google, there are three factors that affect the appearance and placement of ads, which are bid price, quality score and the expected impact of ad extensions and other ad formats.

Your bid price is the maximum amount you’re willing to spend on each keyword, which we discussed before. The higher the bid price, the better. Your quality score is Google’s measure of the quality of your ad to users. This includes how relevant your ad and its keywords are to its landing page. Again, the higher the quality score, the better. The expected impact of your ad extensions and other ad formats refers to any additional information you provide in your ad, such as phone numbers or links. Google values the experience of its users, so the better your ad, the better it will do on search results.

What Can Google AdWords Do for Business?

Now that we’ve explained what Google AdWords is and covered how Google AdWords works, it’s time to give you an idea of what this powerhouse tool can do for your business.

AdWords can get your ad to the top of a Google search results page, which would give it a high chance of being clicked. It can expose your brand to people searching for a business like yours, an exposure that wouldn’t have otherwise existed. It gives you the chance to convince people why your business is better than others in just the click of a button. Google AdWords is quick, customizable, flexible, measurable, and best of all, profitable.

But Google AdWords can only be those things if you do it right. Yes, you may understand what AdWords is and how it works, but there’s a lot more that goes into the process.
